Our Story

Activate is a volunteer based organisation, that organises community events in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia with a focus on planting trees to repair the widespread degradation of Wheatbelt landscapes.

This region has experienced broad scale clearing of native vegetation for agriculture. This massive change to the region’s habitat has caused many environmental issues including salinity and erosion of soil and the loss of native species.

Activate manages events with the aim of getting back in touch with nature through the spirit of celebration. All of our events are brought to you by committed volunteers.

Our Mission & Values

To host unique, sustainable tree planting festivals that combine music, art, food and community together in an effort for ecological harmony.

Integrity - Respect - Sustainability - Enjoyment - Community - Education - Inclusiveness - Creativity

Our vision

Planting seeds of hope and inspiration in the hearts of future generations and empowering them to change the world.

The first experimental tree planting and dance party event format was held in 2000 under the banner of City Farm. Perth City Farm is a 26 year old Urban Farm providing space and opportunities to build community connections while educating and enabling people to live sustainably. They operate our half-hectare site as a vibrant community orientated platform.

As the Activate idea and events developed and grew it became necessary to find new administration of the organisation and so in 2014 Avongro stepped into that role.

Avongro

In 2014 Avongro took over as the governing body of Activate the Wheatbelt. Avongro is a Western Australian volunteer-run not-for-profit incorporated association that aims to…

  • Protect and enhance our environment by increasing awareness and adoption of biodiversity plantings and tree crops as integral parts of landscape management to address natural resource management issues.

  • Investigate, encourage and support diverse and vertically integrated tree crop industries of sufficient scale to achieve environmental, economic and social outcomes in agricultural areas.

  • Facilitate appropriate education and training programs and resources for farmers, tree growers, individuals and organisations within the wider community.

  • Facilitate activities that support environmental, social and economic resilience for all sectors of WA society.

  • To form partnerships with like-minded organisations to achieve the above objectives.

Meet the team making this vision a reality.

Activate the Wheatbelt relies on a core team of committed volunteers to put our events on. Without them our vision would not be possible.
